War returns to Iran with Israel, US strikes

  • The United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iranian targets on February 28, describing the assault as a “pre-emptive” strike. President Donald Trump announced the beginning of what he called “major combat operations.”
  • Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reportedly killed during the US-Israeli attacks. He was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed the position of supreme leader.
  • On April 8, Tehran and Washington agreed to a two-week ceasefire aimed at halting hostilities. The truce was later extended indefinitely and remains in force.
  • In April, Pakistan hosted the first direct face-to-face talks between US and Iranian officials in nearly five decades. While the negotiations produced no major breakthrough, they concluded without a collapse in dialogue.
  • The United States and Iran subsequently reached a preliminary framework agreement to end the conflict. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by President Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
