Shakib has remained outside Bangladesh since student-led uprising that toppled Hasina’s government
Shakib Al Hasan’s Family Home Attacked After Joining Sheikh Hasina’s Online Appearance

DHAKA — The ancestral residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan was attacked after he participated in a virtual media event featuring ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who made her first public media appearance since leaving power in 2024.
According to police, unidentified attackers targeted Shakib’s family home in Magura, located about 170 kilometres southwest of Dhaka. The attackers reportedly smashed windows and threw petrol bombs, triggering a fire on the upper floor of the building. The house was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported.
Shakib has not publicly responded to the attack.
The incident took place shortly after Shakib, a former Awami League parliamentarian, joined a virtual discussion hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi. During the event, Sheikh Hasina said she intended to return to Bangladesh despite facing a death sentence and ongoing legal issues.
“I will return to my people,” Hasina said, adding that she was prepared for possible consequences upon her return.
Shakib has been outside Bangladesh since the student-led protests that led to the fall of Hasina’s government. He is facing multiple investigations involving allegations of murder, corruption, fraud, and money laundering.
During her media address, Hasina also called for the removal of restrictions on the Awami League, the party she headed for over four decades, after it was banned from political activities following her departure.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry condemned Hasina’s media appearance, saying it undermined the country’s sovereignty and could negatively affect relations with India.
Hasina, 78, has been residing in New Delhi since August 2024. Bangladesh has requested her extradition, while India has said the matter is being considered under its legal framework.
In 2025, Bangladesh’s war crimes tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia over allegations related to the deadly crackdown during the 2024 student uprising. She has rejected the accusations, calling them politically driven.
