Broad Peak Tragedy: Five More Bodies Arrive in Skardu
GILGIT: The bodies of five more climbers killed in the Broad Peak avalanche have been brought to Skardu, bringing the total number of recovered bodies transported to the city to eight.
An official reception ceremony was held in their honour, attended by Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Speaker Imran Nadeem, civil and military officials, Alpine Club of Pakistan representatives and local officials.
The bodies were later shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for legal formalities. Officials said the coffins were draped with the national flags of the deceased climbers’ respective countries before arrangements were made for their repatriation.
Nirmal Purja Among Victims
Renowned Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, known for completing the ascent of all 14 of the world’s highest peaks in record time, was among those killed in the tragedy.
An avalanche struck Broad Peak on July 30, severing contact with a 10-member international expedition led by Purja.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that Purja, Chinese climber Zhong Wang, and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa and Kilu Sherpa were among those whose bodies were recovered following a challenging operation.
The recovered bodies were transported to the mountain’s base camp before being airlifted to Skardu.
