A football player was killed and 12 others were injured after lightning struck a football field during a semi-final match in southern Thailand’s Narathiwat province.
Police said the incident happened around 5:30pm local time on Tuesday at Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok while heavy rain was falling during a regional tournament match.
The 24-year-old player, Sofwan Awae, suffered critical injuries after being hit by the lightning strike. Despite immediate medical attention, doctors were unable to save his life, according to police officials.
Awae was representing Abu x Nong in a match against SAMCOLT at the stadium, which is located near the Thailand-Malaysia border.
Footage shared on social media showed a sudden lightning strike on the pitch following a loud explosion, leaving players and spectators shocked.
Officials confirmed that 12 other players were injured in the incident, while authorities continued to assess the situation.
