South DIG says police reviewed over 100 CCTV recordings during investigation into incident
Police on Wednesday arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of a young doctor during a robbery near Teen Talwar in Karachi’s Clifton area, South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza said.
Speaking at a press conference, the senior police officer said the arrests were made during an operation conducted within the jurisdiction of the Defence police station.
The 28-year-old doctor was shot dead on Monday after allegedly resisting a robbery outside a private bank near Teen Talwar in Karachi’s Clifton area.
South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza said the three suspects arrived on two motorcycles to carry out the robbery. He added that investigators gathered crucial evidence within 24 hours of the incident and arrested the suspects over the following 36 hours.
According to the DIG, the suspects were already present when Dr Akash arrived at the bank. He said one of the accused allegedly conducted reconnaissance before the robbery and relayed information to the other suspects.
Police reviewed more than 100 CCTV recordings during the investigation, which revealed that the suspects used two motorcycles and a car to execute the crime. Authorities also recovered a portion of the stolen cash during the operation.
Meanwhile, speaking on Geo News programme Geo Pakistan, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho said two additional suspects had been identified and would be arrested soon. He credited CCTV footage with playing a crucial role in solving the case.
Commenting on the Safe City project, the IGP said the first phase had been completed with around 1,150 surveillance cameras installed, while the second phase was nearly 90% complete.
Odho also highlighted what he described as an improvement in Karachi’s security situation, noting that the city recorded 37 terrorism incidents last year compared with seven so far this year. He added that crime in Karachi’s Defence area had declined following the installation of CCTV cameras, while street crime across Sindh fell by 11.8% during the first six months of the year.
